Ethical fashion: Bio-Trimmings

Many designers created sustainable clothing by focusing on the fabric, but few have interest in trimmings that are equally harmful to the environment. This drives Designer Hoyan Ip to develop her Bio-Trimmings collection. Her range of fashion accessories includes buckles, buttons, shoulder pads and sequins. The twist is all her trimmings come from wasted food destined to be thrown away. The waste is dried, cooked, blended and transformed into colourful embellishment.

I propose to identify the relationship between food waste and waste produced from the fashion industry,” she writes. Fashion and food industry is causing the same waste issue. About one third of the global food production are lost or wasted annually. Likewise, the abundance of fast fashion creates larger than ever waste in landfill. Hoyan’s creation is an explorative answer to both issues.
